Oil Vs. Alternative Energy
From another guest blogger, our friend Amanda. Enjoy!
Lately, there’s been quite a bit of talk about rising oil prices and how to conquer them. Some people are avid opponents of further oil exploration and, presumably, dependence on oil; others are convinced we need to start drilling anywhere and everywhere we have access. And still others, me included, are lost in the middle, seeing strong points with each side. I am all for taking action against the high price of gas, which is affecting not only my gas budget, but my grocery budget, my long term travel plans and everything else under the sun.
But is offshore drilling really the answer? The Energy Department estimates that if we do open up offshore drilling, it will not significantly impact domestic crude and natural gas production or prices until 2030. I’m a hard-fast believer in long-term financial planning, but this is even out of my range of “reasonable.”
But is the alternative any better? After speaking with an energy engineer, it seems that building a large-scale, reliable alternative energy solution will take nearly as long. Again, my wallet is not feeling reassured.
If both options are not going to alleviate oil and gas pains soon, then why not go with the most eco-friendly plan for the long run? Whether alternative energy or offshore drilling, there are certain sacrifices to be made on both sides of the fence. If long term is the only probable time frame with either option, then an environmentally-friendly solution in alternative energy could greatly benefit our global eco system while providing a relief to a growing energy crisis. But the choice is up to you. I recommend keeping your ears open and learning the whole story from both sides before making up your mind.
